Day Trip with the Girls





Yale, super Wetter, leider haben wir die Tour am Visitor Center um 30min. verpasst aber da einige von uns schon öfter dort waren und Katrin sogar die Tour bereits mitgemacht hatte, haben wir den anderen unsere eigene Tour gegeben. Einige Innenhöfe können nur mit einer Student-ID betretten werden, da wir keine hatten sind wir einfach einigen Studenten gefolgt, die quasi für uns die Tür aufgehalten haben ;D
Anschließend wurde dann schwedisch zu Abend gegessen, natürlich bei Ikea.

Donnerstag Abend 8:30pm in der Cheesecake factory in West Hartford, Melli's zwanzigster Geburtstag. Melanie hatte rechtzeitig einen Tisch, oder wohl eher ein Bankett, für Rund 19 Personen reserviert. (alle haben wir jetzt nicht auf ein Foto bekommen, aber zumindest einen Teil) ;D
Für mich gab es diesmal keinen Käsekuchen, den hatte ich bereits zur Kaffee- & Kuchenzeit am Nachmittag Daheim, sondern "orange chicken"! Yummy!!
Morgen geht es wieder nach Boston, wo ich mich schon sehr drauf freue, unzwar werde ich Sina (http://www.sinagoestousa.blogspot.com/) endlich nach langer Zeit wiedersehen und ihr Boston zeigen.

Donnerstag haben Tobias, Daniel und Ich nach der Parade Abends die New York Knicks im Madison Square Garden angefeuert. 120 (Knicks) zu 99 (Grizzlies) ging das Spiel zu Ende und für uns ging es in einen irischen Pub ;D

Heute geht es wieder nach New York, dort werde ich mich mit zwei Kumpels treffen und dann geht es auf zur Parade. Da heute am 17. März wieder der St. Patricks Day statt findet. Letztes Jahr hat es an dem Tag in Boston geregnet, sodass ich nicht gegangen bin.

Abends geht es dann zum Madison Square Garden, wo wir uns die New York Knicks (Basketball) anschauen.

Letzte Woche sind wir dann für einen Tag nach Manhatten gefahren mit dem Bus. Und mit dem Fun-Day Ticket ging es via U-Bahn Kreuz und Quer durch New York City. Anbei ein paar ausgewählte Fotos. 

Am Abend zuvor gab es von uns ein schmackhaftes deutsches Abendessen. Schnitzel, Käsespätzle, Pilzrahmsoße und Salat. Zum Nachtisch haben wir Apfelringe in Vanille-Soße serviert.
Gerne würde ich euch weitere Fotos zeigen vom Boston Trip, nur leider ist meine Kamera von der Mauer des Empire State Building gefallen. Wir haben die Kamera auf Zeitauslöser gestellt und auf die Mauer platziert, kurz darauf kam ein Windstoß... das Objektiv ist defekt. Und die Fotos von meiner Handycam sind leider alle verschwommen.
Jetzt hab ich wenigstens einen Grund für eine Spiegel Reflex Kamera zu sparen ;D

Besuch aus Deutschland

Freitag Abend 19:15 Uhr, die Maschine der US Airways landete auf dem Bradley Airport, an Bord mein Vater. Wir werden die nächsten Tage einiges unternehmen... New York, Boston uvm.

Heute früh waren wir in New Haven, CT und haben die zweit berühmteste Universität - YALE - besichtigt.
Anschließend gab es "Turkey Panini Sandwiches" zum Lunch bei IKEA. ;D

Auf dem Weg zurück nach Canton haben wir beim lokalen Supermarkt (Stop & Shop) angehalten um noch einige Zutaten für das heutige DINNER einzukaufen. Morgen geht es dann erst mal zum Shoppen in die MALL, haha.

Nominated for 2011 "Au Pair of the Year" Award

Mein Gastvater hat mich beim Wettbewerb für das Au Pair des Jahres beworben. Dazu musste er einen 150 Wörter langen Aufsatz schreiben (siehe unten). Heute kam Post und ich bin nominiert. Ob Ich gewinne oder nicht ist nebensächlich, die vielen postitiven Fremdwörter im Aufsatz, welche sich nur mit meinem Wörterbuch übersetzen lassen, sind echt klasse. Ich freue mich sehr, dass ich in der Verde Familie so gut aufgenommen wurde.

Jens is an excellent choice as an Au Pair for my 15 year old son David. Jens has an outstanding character and he is an exceptional role model. Jens is well received by our extended family members and friends and he is well respected among his Au Pair peers. Jens has made a real difference in all of our lives and he has made substantive contributions to the moral character and attitude of his charge, my 15 year old son David. In return, Jens has benefitted immeasurably, and similarly, from his interactions with his host family.

Since his arrival in Canton, CT on April 30, 2010, Jens has been a natural fit and has seamlessly integrated into our family lives and daily routines. Jens is an exceptional problem solver and has been deeply involved in all aspects of family life from planning and executing “fun” trips and outings to participating in household management activities, supervision of David’s homework regimen, other entertainment and just plain being a “big brother” to David that involves a wide range of emotions that cut across the spectrum from joy and fun to focus and self regulation and self awareness. Furthermore, the rapidity with which Jens has increased his knowledge and understanding of the English language is astounding and impressive and therefore helpful to the host family at large. Jens has also attempted to impart, very patiently I might add, an understanding of his native tongue on his host family which is greatly appreciated.



Jens is eager to perform in his role as Au Pair and he always meets his obligations and fulfills his promises. Jens has provided his host family with an in-depth introduction to the German Culture and is always willing to share a story or photo or include his host family in his skype conversations with his natural family in Germany. Jens is a very bright and inquisitive fellow who is always eager to contribute to family discussions and listen to new information. Jens has an outstanding intellect and he is a marvelous board and other strategy game player….many times outwitting his English speaking hosts using his second language (which is our first) to engage in the competitions and many times win.



Jens is a pleasure to have in our home and a great asset. After Jens finishes his assignment in Canton, CT we plan on staying in touch and visiting with Jens and his family in the future in Germany ….in fact, Jens will be a part of our lives for the rest of our lives. Jens has also added a new cross cultural dimension to our lives that, heretofore had not been experienced by us, namely an introduction to other Au Pair personalities from amongst his Au Pair peers. In short, because of Jen’s convivial personality, Jens has provided an invaluable stream of new faces and personalities from many regions of the world and from many walks of life. This cross cultural experience has enriched our lives and introduced us to new ideas and people that would have otherwise been unavailable without Jens serving as a cultural bridge.



In summary, Jens is an outstanding person with an incredible amount of integrity who has made an indelible mark on his host family and many excellent contributions that have enriched our lives and broadened the horizons of our entire family and therefore Jens should be considered a top contender for the Au Pair of the Year Award.

Hej kära läsare,
Vi har våldgästat Jens idag eller vi kom 4,5 h för tidigt. Just nu äter vi kanelbullar som Jens har bakat. Snart ska vi kolla på Luftslottet som sprängdes, som är sista delen i Stieg Larssons triologi, Millenium. Sen ska Jens bjuda oss på middag och till efterrätt bjuder vi på våra hembakade semlor (cream buns).

Hello dear readers,
We showed up surprisingly early to our date with Jens, like 4,5 hours :P Right now, we are eating cinnamon buns that Jens has baked. Soon we will watch The Girl who kicked the hornet's nest, which is the last part of Stieg Larsson's trilogy, the Millennium. And then Jens will cook us a nice dinner and for dessert we will serve our homemade rolls (cream buns).

Letztes Wochenende war mein Gastbruder bei seiner Mutter und ich hatte somit mein freies Wochenende. Welches mit einer Party bei Anita am Freitag Abend anfing und endete am Sonntag Abend mit einem schwedischen Movie.
Samstag war ich bei Zara (Au Pair aus Australien) zu ihrer Abschiedsfeier eingeladen. Zara hat jetzt ihr Jahr rum und startet diese Woche ihren Travel Month.

Am Sonntag haben Julia, Fia (beides Au Pairs aus Schweden) und Ich den Film "Män som hatar kvinnor" (englischer Titel: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) geschaut. Der Film war in schwedisch mit englischem Untertitel nach dem Roman von Stieg Larson. Im deutschen heißt das Buch "Verblendung". Bevor wir den Film geschaut haben gab es zum Dinner "Nudel-Schinken-Gratin", zum Nachtisch haben Fia und Julia schwedische schokoladenkugeln mitgebracht. (Cultural exchange! I love it!) ;D
